Jessira Saunders, Product Strategy Manager, Livestock Assurances and Feedback, Integrity Systems Company/Meat and Livestock Australia

Coming from a farming background in Victoria’s Central Highlands, Jessira studied animal science at Charles Sturt, with the goal of becoming a veterinarian. During her time at Charles Sturt, she was selected for the 2010 Australian National Judging Team, resulting in a change to her career path towards livestock production and meat science. After completing a final year project with the Pork CRC, she joined Meat and Livestock Australia, as a Research, Development and Analytics manager for Meat Standards Australia. She travelled the country undertaking new research into eating quality. In her current role, Jessira is the Product Strategy Manager for Integrity Systems Company’s on-farm animal production, biosecurity, traceability and animal welfare programs – Livestock Production Assurance and the National Livestock Identification System.

Katherine Moore, Associate Lecturer in Veterinary Technology School of Agriculture, Environment and Veterinary Sciences, Charles Sturt University

Katherine is a registered veterinary nurse/veterinary technologist working as an academic in Veterinary Technology at Charles Sturt University. After completing a Bachelor of Veterinary Technology, she developed a strong clinical foundation in emergency and critical care within a 24-hour referral hospital in regional New South Wales, where she gained experience in advanced anaesthesia, imaging, and complex patient management. Katherine is passionate about bridging the gap between clinical practice and education, bringing real-world experience into the classroom to prepare students for the demands of the veterinary industry. She is actively working towards her veterinary technologist specialist (VTS) certification in emergency and critical care and is a dedicated advocate for the advancement and recognition of veterinary technologists in Australia. In addition to her teaching and clinical roles, Katherine is heavily involved in the Veterinary Nurses Council of Australia (VNCA) NSW branch, contributing to professional development and industry progression.

Dr Liesel Barrow, Wagga Wagga Veterinary Hospital

Dr Liesel Barrow is an associate veterinarian at Wagga Wagga Veterinary Hospital, where she has worked since graduating from Charles Sturt in 2022. Originally from southwest Victoria, Liesel grew up just outside Colac surrounded by cats, dogs and horses, which sparked her interest in veterinary medicine from an early age. After completing a gap year in 2016, working and travelling to Africa, she moved to Wagga Wagga in 2017 to begin her veterinary studies. Today, Liesel has a particular interest in small animal medicine and spends much of her time consulting with pet owners, performing diagnostic procedures, and carrying out surgery to care for companion animals. Working in a regional mixed practice also means she occasionally heads out on farm visits to help with large animal emergencies. She is the proud owner of two cheeky Jack Russells, loves a weekend long run and still enjoys being involved in the football/netball club.

Jasmine Wholton, Bachelor of Veterinary Biology/Bachelor of Veterinary Science (Honours), Charles Sturt University

Jasmine is eager to support and mentor students starting their journey in the field. Originally from Biara, Queensland, Jasmine’s family operates a droughtmaster stud. Before university, she gained hands-on experience working in a feedlot, where her passion for large animal medicine emerged. After graduation, she plans to work in mixed practice for several years before specialising in cattle medicine.

Tom Dixon, Equine Performance Analyst, Sport Science team, Ciaron Maher Racing

Tom has always been passionate about horses, which sparked his career aspirations. In Year 10, he decided to focus his education towards a career in the equine industry, which led him to discovering the Bachelor of Equine Science at Charles Sturt University. Through his time during the course and industry employment his interest in the physiology of high-performing equine athletes introduced him to the world of equine sport science. Attracted by the science-based management and welfare systems as well as monitoring how horses respond to exercise internally, Tom found satisfaction in being able to take the guess-work out of training horses and rely on measurable statistics. Tom now analyses racehorse training and supports advanced sport science research, working with some of the top horses in the country.

Michael Roffe, Bachelor of Veterinary Technology and Bachelor of Veterinary Science, Charles Sturt University

Originally from Sydney, Michael enrolled at Charles Sturt University as a mature-age student following a professional career with Taronga Zoo Sydney and NSW Health. This background in both wildlife and human health sparked a deep interest in epidemiology and public health – a passion he carries into his studies. Currently in his third year of a Bachelor of Veterinary Technology and his first year of a Bachelor of Veterinary Biology/Bachelor of Veterinary Science, Michael is working toward a career as a mixed practice veterinarian. Outside of the clinic, he is an active member of the Wagga Wagga community, frequently attending agricultural shows and playing tuba in the Riverina Concert Band.
